Story:
Throughout high school I remember having to read many, many books. For me, this was not particularly enjoyable as most of the books that were required, were not of interest to me. I found myself having to sit through pages and pages of information that just didn't seem relevant to my world. It wasn't until I had reread some of those books later in life, that I understood the underlying lessons within them. One of those books being Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. If you haven't read the book, the basic premise is that in the world it takes place in, books are in fact bad because they suggest controversial information and are actively sought out to be destroyed by firefighters.
As I mentioned before, it wasn't until I was older that I realized the book really isn't about books at all. It's about information, knowledge and most importantly, freedom. There was no freedom or encouragement to be your own person in the fictional world. Any opposing viewpoint or free-thinkers were oppressed and silenced. I realized how relevant that actually was to my world. For my whole life, I have been able to think the way I want, believe what I want, speak as I want, without that ever being threatened. The reality is that Fahrenheit 451 may be fiction to us, but that type of world is very real to others. We owe so much to the men and women fighting for our freedom day in and day out. Without them, we wouldn't be able to live our life to its full potential.
