Description
Du Pré, Jacqueline. (1945-1987) [Moore, Timothy. (1922-2003)]Autograph Letter
A rare autograph letter signed from the brilliant English cellist who died so tragically young, to British composer and pianist Timothy Moore. London, December 12, 1964. "Dear Mr. Moore, Thank you very much for your kind letter offering to send me a copy of your St. Medard Variations. I should be very happy to look at them again but see no chance in the near future of playing them for the B.B.C. Yours sincerely, Jacqueline du Pré." 2 pp. on 2 sheets. Folding creases and some light toning at the edges; overall in fine condition. 5.5 x 7 inches (13.6 x 17.8 cm).
Du Pré made her formal Wigmore Hall debut in 1961 at the age of only 16. By 1964, she was achieving international recognition, becoming a favorite at the Proms with her beloved Elgar cello concerto. Composer Timothy Moore taught at the Dartington Hall School from 1950 to 1982, the site of the important Dartington Summer School where du Pré performed several times in the early 1960's. It was there that she studied with and impressed Paul Tortelier, and began to play with pianist George Malcolm.
