Description

This is a black-and-white plate from an extremely rare book that is approximately 75 years old. It depicts a beautiful border collie who worked as a messenger dog during WWI for the British Corps H.Q. Kennels near Nieppe Wood. You can clearly see the message tube on his collar. Photo ws taken in May 1916, though it was not published here until 1933.
These dogs were sometimes called Red Cross Dog, Ambulance Dog, Chien Sanitaire, sanitshund, messenger dog, search and rescue dog, War Dog, Military Dog, etc..
It has a blank back, meaning it was printed separately from the text for better quality and then tipped in or sewn into the book when it was bound. It would look wonderful framed.
The paper is heavy and of quality. The page measures approx. 5.5 x 8.5 inches, and the picture (without margins) is approx. 3.5 x 5.5 inches.
This is GENUINE antique/vintage item. It is not a modern reproduction.
