Description
D. M. Lyon & Clearman Mortice Gauge ~ Rosewood & Brass Gage ~ From the 1850sWhat a showy Marking Gauge. Rosewood and lots of Brass, all with a beautiful patina. Please scroll down for more photos. Made by D. M. Lyon & Clearman of Newark, New Jersey, it dates to the 1850s.
Prominently featured in Bacheller's
American Marking Gauges
, Lyon made "Carpenter's and Joiners' Tools" including levels and had several partners over the years; his association with Clearman dated from around 1856 through about 1860.
Marked on the gauge head with the "D.M.Lyon & Clearman" mark shown by Bacheller with the right hand sign of the mark partly obscured by somewhat heavy dinging caused by some yoyo having once deployed it as a hammer. Other than this (which does not distract from the overall good look of the gauge) there is no consequential damage of any sort. It is fully operational and could be put back to work just as it sits!
A beautiful old gauge that will look great in your tool box or on your workbench (or even on your desk if you insist). Don't get sniped!!
